Temporary traffic changes on Lyell Highway at Granton – June 2025
As part of ongoing works on the New Bridgewater Bridge Project, construction of a new section of the Lyell Highway at Granton, including the p-turn at the Granton causeway roundabout, will continue over coming weeks.
To keep workers and road users safe, a section of the highway between Black Snake Road and the Granton causeway will be temporarily closed.
Detours will be in place and the works will be done in two stages.
These changes will impact vehicles using Lyell Highway, Black Snake Road, Rusts Road and Forest Road in Granton and Gunn Street, Boyer Road and Old Main Road in Bridgewater.
Stage 1 – From Wednesday, 25 June 2025 (approx. one week)
Lyell Highway traffic travelling towards Hobart:
- Vehicles will be diverted over the old Bridgewater Bridge.
- Vehicles can then either:
- Use the Boyer Road ramp to continue to Hobart via the new bridge, or
- Travel north on Old Main Road to access the Midland Highway.
- Temporary traffic signals will operate at the Boyer Road intersection during peak periods.
Lyell Highway traffic travelling towards New Norfolk:
- Vehicles will use the Black Snake Road underpass and new roundabout, travelling under the new bridge on what is normally the Hobart-bound lane of the Lyell Highway.
During the stage one detour, Gunn Street traffic entering Old Main Road must give way to northbound traffic from the old bridge.
Vehicles accessing Rusts Road from the Lyell Highway must detour via Forest Road between 6am and 6pm from Monday, 23 June 2025 and Monday, 30 June 2025 (inclusive).
Stage 2 – Following stage one, around early July 2025 (approx. four weeks)
- All stage one traffic conditions stay in place except:
- The New Norfolk-bound lane of the Lyell Highway will reopen between Black Snake Road and the Granton causeway roundabout.
At the completion of the work, permanent traffic conditions will be reinstated.
Heavy vehicles
While most heavy vehicles will be able to travel on the detour routes, Over Size Over Mass (OSOM) vehicles over 4.6 metres high cannot travel over the old Bridgewater Bridge and must contact the project on 1800 517 290 prior to travel to arrange an escort through the site.
An over height vehicle pullover bay will be provided on the Lyell Highway travelling towards Hobart.
Vehicles are asked to follow all signs, directions from traffic controllers and posted speed limits during this time.
