New Bridgewater Bridge Project

Current work

Please allow extra time when travelling through the project area as you may experience some delays. You can view a list of all planned works within the project area in the current Roadworks Roundup.

The Roadworks Roundup is published every Friday afternoon and lists all our planned works for the next two weeks.

Causeway access to temporary bridge

A walkway will be installed from the causeway to the steel section of the temporary bridge. The walkway will allow for concrete to be pumped from trucks on the causeway to the work fronts on the water. The walkway has been installed for construction worker access from the northern compound so they can avoid moving through the busy northern end of the temporary bridge. There will be no vehicle or public access on the walkway, and it will be removed at the completion of the project.

Oversized truck movements on East Derwent Highway

From early April 2024, motorists are asked to be aware of oversized truck movements from Bridgewater to Granton via the East Derwent Highway and Brooker Highway as major construction on the New Bridgewater Bridge continues. To minimise disruption and to keep people safe, the movements will take place during the day, outside of peak travel times, and will travel from the precast yard in Bridgewater to their destination in Granton, travelling between 5-30km/h.

Old Main Road closure

As part of the New Bridgewater Bridge Project, the northern end of Old Main Road has been closed. The closure is part of the final design and will facilitate other aspects of construction activities. Clear and appropriate signage has been placed in the area to ensure that non-local motorists are aware of the changes, and local residents are asked to plan their journeys and use alternative routes where possible. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience to residents and businesses in the area, and we apologise for any disruption that may occur. The project team will continue to provide regular updates on the progress of the New Bridgewater Bridge Project, including any further disruptions that may occur.

Out of hours work

To take advantage of favourable conditions, and to minimise disruption to the wider community, the project is continuing with out of hours work (OOHW) throughout 2024. Standard construction hours are Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm, and Saturdays from 8am to 6pm. Most high impact work including piling for the permanent bridge, will be carried out during the standard construction hours, with less impacting activities taking place outside of these times, as well as during standard construction hours.

Closure of Bridgewater Bridge lifting span

To allow for the construction of the new Bridgewater Bridge, the Department of State Growth has closed the lifting span on the existing bridge. The lifting span will remain closed until the completion of the new Bridgewater Bridge in 2025. Vessels under 2.2 metres on an average tide are able to travel under the existing bridge without the lifting span being opened. The new Bridgewater Bridge will include a navigation clearance consistent with the Bowen Bridge, allowing vessels to move freely past Bridgewater towards New Norfolk.

Closure of Bridgewater boat ramp

To keep the public and our workers safe, the Bridgewater boat ramp and jetty will remain closed throughout the project. River users wishing to access the river can do so at the nearby Old Beach boat ramp, around 8 kilometres downstream. Nielsen Esplanade, including the playground, will remain accessible throughout the project. The project is planning to reinstate the boat ramp at the completion of the project, in consultation with Brighton Council.

Stage 2 traffic changes

As major construction of the new Bridgewater Bridge continues, there are changes to travel through the project area.

Concrete barriers across the project site separate our workers from traffic and changes are happening in stages to minimise impacts.

In Granton, a temporary roundabout is in place on the Brooker Highway, and all through traffic has been switched onto the new Lyell Highway. A section of Black Snake Road has been closed, and Main Road traffic is temporarily diverted along George Street.

In Bridgewater, all Midland Highway northbound traffic is using Old Main Road, while southbound traffic remains on the existing highway.

Boyer Road between Old Main Road and the Midland Highway is closed.

Boyer Road motorists travelling to Hobart can turn left into Old Main Road, onto the new Midland Highway on-ramp and travel to the East Derwent Highway roundabout to then travel south on the Midland Highway or on the East Derwent Highway.

There is safe pedestrian access and access to properties across the project site at all times, and businesses on Old Main Road, Bridgewater are operating as normal.

The existing bridge will stay open throughout construction.

During this time, you will see workers on site and there will be traffic management in place. Please be patient and follow signage and any directions given by traffic controllers.

The plans above show all of the different stages of traffic changes that will be implemented throughout the construction of the new bridge and interchanges. For more information on each stage click on the image to enlarge it and use the arrows to move between each slide.
