Current work
The new Bridgewater Bridge opened to traffic on 1 June 2025. Work is continuing over coming months, so please allow extra time when travelling through the project area as you may experience some delays.
You can view a list of all planned works within the project area in the current Roadworks Roundup.
The Roadworks Roundup is published every Friday afternoon and lists all our planned works for the next two weeks.

Out of hours work
To take advantage of favourable conditions, and to minimise disruption to the wider community, the project is continuing with out of hours work (OOHW) in 2025. Standard construction hours are Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm, and Saturdays from 8am to 6pm. Most high impact work including piling for the permanent bridge, will be carried out during the standard construction hours, with less impacting activities taking place outside of these times, as well as during standard construction hours.
More about Out of hours workClosure of Bridgewater Bridge lifting span
To allow for the construction of the new Bridgewater Bridge, the Department of State Growth has closed the lifting span on the existing bridge. The lifting span will remain closed until the completion of the new Bridgewater Bridge in 2025. Vessels under 2.2 metres on an average tide are able to travel under the existing bridge without the lifting span being opened. The new Bridgewater Bridge will include a navigation clearance consistent with the Bowen Bridge, allowing vessels to move freely past Bridgewater towards New Norfolk.

To keep the public and our workers safe, the Bridgewater boat ramp and jetty will remain closed throughout the project. River users wishing to access the river can do so at the nearby Old Beach boat ramp, around 8 kilometres downstream. Nielsen Esplanade, including the playground, will remain accessible throughout the project. The project is planning to reinstate the boat ramp at the completion of the project, in consultation with Brighton Council.

Because of its poor condition and increasing maintenance cost, the old Bridgewater Bridge will be removed.
More about Removal of old Bridgewater BridgeThe new Bridgewater Bridge opened to traffic on 1 June 2025. As part of ongoing works in the area, construction of a new section of the Lyell Highway at Granton, including the p-turn at the Granton causeway roundabout, will continue over coming weeks.
To keep workers and road users safe, a section of the highway between Black Snake Road and the Granton causeway will be temporarily closed.
Detours will be in place and the works will be done in two stages.
These changes will impact vehicles using Lyell Highway, Black Snake Road, Rusts Road and Forest Road in Granton and Gunn Street, Boyer Road and Old Main Road in Bridgewater.
Stage 1 – From Wednesday, 25 June 2025 (approx. one week)
Lyell Highway traffic travelling towards Hobart:
- Vehicles will be diverted over the old Bridgewater Bridge.
- Vehicles can then either:
- Use the Boyer Road ramp to continue to Hobart via the new bridge, or
- Travel north on Old Main Road to access the Midland Highway.
- Temporary traffic signals will operate at the Boyer Road intersection during peak periods.
Lyell Highway traffic travelling towards New Norfolk:
- Vehicles will use the Black Snake Road underpass and new roundabout, travelling under the new bridge on what is normally the Hobart-bound lane of the Lyell Highway.
During the stage one detour, Gunn Street traffic entering Old Main Road must give way to northbound traffic from the old bridge.
Vehicles accessing Rusts Road from the Lyell Highway must detour via Forest Road between 6am and 6pm from Monday, 23 June 2025 and Monday, 30 June 2025 (inclusive).
Stage 2 – Following stage one, around early July 2025 (approx. four weeks)
- All stage one traffic conditions stay in place except:
- The New Norfolk-bound lane of the Lyell Highway will reopen between Black Snake Road and the Granton causeway roundabout.
At the completion of the work, permanent traffic conditions will be reinstated.
Heavy vehicles
While most heavy vehicles will be able to travel on the detour routes, Over Size Over Mass (OSOM) vehicles over 4.6 metres high cannot travel over the old Bridgewater Bridge and must contact the project on 1800 517 290 prior to travel to arrange an escort through the site.
An over height vehicle pullover bay will be provided on the Lyell Highway travelling towards Hobart.
