Oversized movements
Motorists are asked to be aware of oversized truck movements from Bridgewater to both ends of the new Bridgewater Bridge via the Midland Highway, East Derwent Highway and Brooker Highway over the next six months as major construction continues.
More about Oversized movementsOld Main Road closure
As part of the New Bridgewater Bridge Project, the northern end of Old Main Road has been closed. The closure is part of the final design and will facilitate other aspects of construction activities. Clear and appropriate signage has been placed in the area to ensure that non-local motorists are aware of the changes, and local residents are asked to plan their journeys and use alternative routes where possible. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience to residents and businesses in the area, and we apologise for any disruption that may occur. The project team will continue to provide regular updates on the progress of the New Bridgewater Bridge Project, including any further disruptions that may occur.

To take advantage of favourable conditions, and to minimise disruption to the wider community, the project is continuing with out of hours work (OOHW) throughout 2024. Standard construction hours are Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm, and Saturdays from 8am to 6pm. Most high impact work including piling for the permanent bridge, will be carried out during the standard construction hours, with less impacting activities taking place outside of these times, as well as during standard construction hours.

To allow for the construction of the new Bridgewater Bridge, the Department of State Growth has closed the lifting span on the existing bridge. The lifting span will remain closed until the completion of the new Bridgewater Bridge in 2025. Vessels under 2.2 metres on an average tide are able to travel under the existing bridge without the lifting span being opened. The new Bridgewater Bridge will include a navigation clearance consistent with the Bowen Bridge, allowing vessels to move freely past Bridgewater towards New Norfolk.

To keep the public and our workers safe, the Bridgewater boat ramp and jetty will remain closed throughout the project. River users wishing to access the river can do so at the nearby Old Beach boat ramp, around 8 kilometres downstream. Nielsen Esplanade, including the playground, will remain accessible throughout the project. The project is planning to reinstate the boat ramp at the completion of the project, in consultation with Brighton Council.

Concrete barriers across the project site separate our workers from traffic and changes are happening in stages to minimise impacts.
From Wednesday, 11 December traffic going south on the Midland Highway will move onto the Gunn Street off-ramp to access the new road under the northern end of the new bridge.
Traffic can then continue south over the existing bridge or north on Old Main Road.
There will be pedestrian paths and safe access to the relocated southbound temporary bus stop near the northern end of the new bridge.
Change in Granton from Monday, 16 December will see the new section of the Lyell Highway separated, with southbound traffic through Granton being moved onto a new single lane of the Lyell Highway.
This passes under the southern end of the new bridge onto the Brooker Highway towards Hobart.
Northbound traffic through Granton will stay on the new section of the Lyell Highway.
There will be a temporary U-turn on the Brooker Highway for southbound traffic wanting to return north, which will be removed in early 2025 when Black Snake Road reopens.
These changes will be in place until traffic moves onto the new bridge in mid-2025.
The existing bridge will stay open throughout construction.
When travelling through the site, you will see workers and there will be traffic management in place. Please be patient and follow signs and any directions from traffic controllers.
The plans above show all of the different stages of traffic changes that will be implemented throughout the construction of the new bridge and interchanges. For more information on each stage click on the image to enlarge it and use the arrows to move between each slide.
