New Bridgewater Bridge Project

Oversize truck movements on Brooker Highway and East Derwent Highway

Motorists are asked to be aware of oversized truck movements from the Port of Hobart to Bridgewater and Granton over coming months as major construction continues on the new Bridgewater Bridge.

From Thursday, 16 February 2023, steel bridge piles and pile casings will be transported to the project site and will form part of the temporary bridge and new bridge being built across the River Derwent.

It is estimated that there will be one delivery per week consisting of a convoy of two trucks.

Over the next three months, 54 steel piles will be transported from the port along the Brooker Highway, crossing over Bowen Bridge and continuing North on East Derwent Highway to Bridgewater in the early hours of the morning.

These piles are all one metre wide and between 28 and 39 metres long and will be used to build the temporary bridge.

From late March until early 2024, 36 piles, each measuring 2.5 metres wide and between 24 and 48 metres long will be transported along the Brooker Highway and East Derwent Highway, travelling to Granton and Bridgewater. These will be delivered individually over concurrent nights with deliveries approximately three weeks apart and will be used to help build the permanent bridge.

To minimise disruption to road users and the wider community, the movements will mostly take place in the early morning, between 2:00am and 5:00am and will take around 1.5 hours to travel from the port to their destinations.

The piles and pile casings will be transported on a truck with an extendable steerable trailer, which has the ability to extend for longer loads.

To assist with the movements, Department of State Growth Transport Inspectors will be escorting the oversize loads.

While no road closures or delays are expected, motorists are asked to slow down if they observe a Transport Inspector or pilot vehicle and obey all directions given. Some minor interruptions to traffic may occur.
