New Bridgewater Bridge Project

New Bridgewater Bridge wins planning award – December 2022

As major construction on the New Bridgewater Bridge Project continues to ramp up, the success of the project to date has this week been recognised, winning the 2022 Planning Institute of Australia Tasmania – Planning Excellence Award for Strategic Planning Project.

The award highlights the project’s approach to preparing for and receiving a Major Project Permit – the first project to do so using the Tasmanian Government’s new Major Projects legislation.

Building a new Bridgewater Bridge is a once-in-a-generation project that has required significant strategic thinking and planning.

The coordinated assessment of the project was undertaken by an independent expert panel appointed by the Tasmanian Planning Commission, with additional expertise provided by relevant statutory regulators including the EPA, Heritage Tasmania and TasWater.

The use of the Major Projects pathway allowed for a great breadth of coordinated regulator input, and this resulted in conditions that provided for the efficient delivery of the project while protecting environmental and community values.

The announcement follows on from the project’s recent success in being named Tasmanian Project of the Year at the Australian Institute of Project Management Achievement Awards in November
