New Bridgewater Bridge Project

New Bridgewater Bridge traffic switch in Granton – December 2023

With major construction of the new Bridgewater Bridge now underway, changes to the way traffic travels through the project site will come into place from next week so that construction can continue safely.

On the southern side of the river, a new temporary roundabout will be in place on the Brooker Highway at Granton and all traffic will switch onto the new Lyell Highway alignment.

This will allow construction to continue safely on the Brooker Highway approach to the new bridge and the area around the southern bridge abutment as well as the construction of a new bridge over Black Snake Road.

A section of Black Snake Road in Granton will be closed and traffic on Main Road, Granton will be temporarily diverted along George Street to travel north or south on the Brooker Highway.

This diversion will be in place for around three months.

During this time, heavy vehicle operators who would normally access the Brooker Highway from Main Road, Granton will be unable to use the temporary diversion through George Street.

B-double vehicles will need to access the Brooker Highway from Claremont Link Road, while 19 metre semi-trailers can access the Brooker Highway from Arncliffe Road.

Changes on the northern side of the river in Bridgewater will come into place in early 2024 and will see all Midland Highway traffic travelling north through Bridgewater diverted along Old main Road and onto the new northbound on ramp.

Traffic travelling south on the Midland Highway will remain on the existing alignment.

There will be safe pedestrian access and access to properties across the project site at all times.

During this time, you will see workers on site and there will be traffic management in place. Drivers travelling through the area are asked to always follow posted speed limits, watch out for workers and obey any instructions given by traffic controllers.

The existing bridge will continue to stay open throughout construction, and we will maintain safe pedestrian access and access to private properties at all times.
