New Bridgewater Bridge Project

Major traffic changes in Bridgewater – February 2024

As major construction on the New Bridgewater Bridge continues, significant traffic changes will take place in Bridgewater and will remain in place until traffic is moved onto the New Bridgewater Bridge in 2025.

From 7:00pm on Friday, 23 February initial changes will see the Midland Highway closed from near the Bridgewater Bridge to the new Midland Highway on and off ramps, with all traffic temporarily moving onto Old Main Road and utilising the new Midland Highway on and off ramps.

This will remain in place for two days while the pedestrian overpass near McDonalds is safely removed on Saturday, 24 and Sunday, 25 February and southbound heavy vehicles will be diverted along East Derwent Highway.

From Monday, 26 February northbound Midland Highway traffic will move onto the recently upgraded Old Main Road, using a new Midland Highway on-ramp to travel north, while traffic travelling south through Bridgewater towards the existing bridge will stay on the Midland Highway.

The changes will allow for the construction of the northern approach to the new bridge, reconstruction of Boyer Road to tie into the new Boyer Road underpass, and construction of the new Midland Highway off ramp into Bridgewater.

Boyer Road between Old Main Road and the Midland Highway will be closed.

Boyer Road motorists travelling to Hobart will turn left into Old Main Road, onto the new Midland Highway on-ramp and travel to the East Derwent Highway roundabout to then travel south on the Midland Highway or continue on the East Derwent Highway. Midland Highway southbound traffic will be able to access Old Main Road, Boyer Road and businesses by making a U-turn south of the existing Boyer Road roundabout.

The Midland Highway southbound bus stop will remain in place just south of the Gunn Street intersection, while the northbound bus stop will be temporarily located at Old Main Road, opposite the McDonalds entry.

Safe pedestrian access, and access to private properties will be maintained at all times, with pedestrians asked to follow all signage and cross at designated crossing points.

Drivers travelling through the area are asked to always follow posted speed limits, watch out for workers and obey any instructions given by traffic controllers.
