New Bridgewater Bridge Project

Changed traffic conditions in Bridgewater and Granton – May 2023

Changes to traffic conditions on Main Road, Granton and Gunn Street, Bridgewater will start from next week as major construction continues on the new Bridgewater Bridge.

From Thursday, 25 May, a new temporary connection will be open  for southbound Midland Highway and Lyell Highway traffic accessing Main Road and Black Snake Lane, Granton.

Opening a new temporary off-ramp connection will allow for the closure of a short section of Main Road between Brooker Highway and Black Snake Lane, allowing for the construction of the southern bridge abutment.

On the northern side of the river, access to Gunn Street from the Midland Highway/Gunn Street/Boyer Road roundabout will close from Friday, 26 May to allow the opening of a new temporary connection to Gunn Street, further north on the Midland Highway.

The new Gunn Street connection will be two way, and traffic movements at the intersection of Gunn Street and Midland Highway will be left in and left out only.

Traffic wanting to travel north from Gunn Street will need to turn at the Midland Highway/Boyer Road roundabout before heading north on the Midland Highway, and traffic travelling from Hobart into Gunn Street will need to go to the East Derwent Highway roundabout and then turn into Gunn Street.

The closure of access to Gunn Street from the roundabout will allow for construction of the northern abutment of the new bridge to continue without impacting Midland Highway traffic and ensuring that workers are safe.

There will be safe pedestrian access and access to properties across the project site at all times and the pedestrian overpass near McDonalds will remain open to allow safe pedestrian movement across the Midland Highway.

The barriers will be moved overnight, between 6pm and 6am and there will be a 40km/h speed limit in place.

While no significant delays through the area are expected, drivers should plan their journeys, allow extra time and obey all signage and instructions from traffic controllers.
